Psycho Fish Meets the Koi

I have had a monumentally lazy day today (well, Saturday actually since it is now 12:24 a.m. Sunday morning). I woke up around 7 a.m. to find Krista and Chad (her boyfriend) in the kitchen making French toast, hash browns and bacon. Yummmm. I went back to the bedroom, curled up on the couch we have in there and started reading. Then I fell asleep over the book and didn't wake up until 12:45 p.m. Amazing. I wandered into the kitchen again, this time making coffee, watched "The Air Up There", showered, dressed and left the house about 4:45 to buy a fish tank.

By way of explanation, Psycho Fish is Krista's goldfish from her junior year of high school. That was FIVE years ago. Psycho Fish is also the Hannibal Lector of the goldfish world. He is very aggressive and routinely knocks out the fish bowl competition not to mention himself on the walls of the tank. The tank we had was starting to leak and realizing that even a Psycho Fish needs a secure home, we headed over to Pet Extreme and brought home a ten gallon tank. After serious discussions with the fresh water fish expert at PE, we also brought home a koi to take up residence with our goldfish. Linda, the expert, said we did not want to purchase a fancy goldfish since they are very mild manner. Since Clark Kent versus Hannibal Lector was not what I had in mind, we went with Plan B, a koi. Since Koi can hold their own with fish bowl bullies, we picked up a koi about three inches long. So far, all is harmonious in fish world. I'm heading out now for Chinese for dinner

10 gallons?? We had Koi a few years back. We placed them (3) in a 20 gal, but three years later, we had this gigantic 50 gal in our living room - with still 3 Koi! Just when we were at the point of needed a pond, the contract on the house closed, and there was no way in heck I was going to drag those darn fish 1400 miles! They went to a pond in CO. lol

Anyway, Koi are wonderful pets. They can be tamed to come to the surface of the water to be petted and take food from your hand. Ours loved to swim in circles and 'flop' on the water when they heard the cabinet door open. They are such kindly fish, and a treasure in any tank or pond. Spoil them with frozen bloodworms for a treat!

Oh, do you use a Biowheel for filtration? Koi and goldfish (carp in general) love to pollute their water, and we found that Biowheels worked wonders for all our tanks.

This is so funny, because we had a goldfish we called Rocky - we won him at the church fair one year, and he lived for SEVEN years! I spent who knows how much money on bigger and bigger fishbowls and tanks because he got to be quite be bruiser. He even outlived the 79 cent "brother" we picked up at the dime store. I can't say I cried when Rocky finally went to the big pond in the sky. But somehome I could never bring myself to "flush him" before his time!

Wishing you continued peace and harmony in your fishy kingdom!

You had me smiling. Fish tanks are one of my favorites. You can have frogs and bottom feeders and real plants, and life looks so good in there. I once watched neons being born! Thanks, Anne.

Love the fish story!
It reminds me of my son's 7th grade teacher who had two Koi, he kept them in an aquarium at the back of the classroom during the school year and then in a pond at home for the summer. He was so fond of them and claimed they were extremely intelligent. When it was feeding time they would lift their heads out of the aquarium and eat from his hand!

I had a beautiful goldfish with a long ribbon like tail. When I moved I moved to France, I gave my goldfish, who at the time was seven years old, to my cousin...the goldfish layed on his side at the bottom of the bowl, alive, depressed for two weeks my cousin said, finally the fish decided life was better in the bowl than going down the toilet and perked up. It lived another three years. My fish's name was Sweet lips.
Sounds like you have the mean twin of sweet lips!
What a fun Ihad reading your post and recalling my fish!

we have an agressive goldfish that my son won at a fair! This fish is crazy! He has managed to dig in his rocks in the bottom of the tank and ends up with head injuries. Last weekend we put the rocks back in cause his injuries from the last episode had healed and I thought he had did it for the last time. He was floating on his side, still breathing mind you.
Kids were freaking "poor Goldie, Mom do something" I'm like whatcha want me to do give afish mouth to mouth? HA We got up the next morning and he was swimming around like nothing had happened jumping up to be fed. Yes this crazy thing will eat out of our hands too!

What a fun story about crazed goldfish from Goldie's grandma. Our Psycho Fish was also from a fair. Must be something in the fair water. LOL
