Auburn, CA, a set on Flickr.
As you can see in the pictures above, Don made a new friend, a 12 year old Macaw named Mia. She is totally devoted to her human but easily moves back and forth between anyone who invites her aboard. The still functioning old fashion ice cream counter is part of an historic drugstore on Lincoln Way. This is two pictures blended to make one and the counter is actually one long counter. Blending the pictures created this corner design. I actually like this one better. It feels friendlier.
On our local PBS station was have a show called California Gold. The host is a character named Hewell Houser. Every week he brings views to interesting places off the beaten path in California. A while back his show featured Awful Annie's Restaurant in Auburn. Of course, I had to check it out. I fully expected Hewell's long, long waiting line but it was the middle of the week at 2 p.m. We just walked in an were seated.
We enjoyed our meal on the second story porch and the food was all it was cracked up to be. (picture is from the website) The servers were young and friendly and knowledgeable about the history of the restaurant which has actually been in business for many years. Click HERE to take a peek at their menu. The pictures are more than persuasive to entice a visit.
Auburn is dotted with murals throughout the town and I managed to get pictures of two of them. I looked around for a directory for the murals but didn't find anything (yet). I DID google Auburn CA murals and clicked images. You can find several more there.
Old Town Auburn is a foodie's, shopper's, history buff's paradise. You would need at least three days to enjoy all the cafes, shops, and museums that are here. There are lots of hotels but for the full treatment, visit the Power's Mansion Inn. Here is my review on TripAdvisor.

It sounds like the most wonderful trip -- and I really love the pix with the macaw! We have been airing California Gold, too. A very nice show!
